On display at the Egill Ólafsson Museum at Hnjótur is a unique collection of old objects from the Westfjords which offers a clear insight into daily life in centuries past. Also on display are many objects connected to the history of economic activity in the first half of the 20th century, not least fishing, including several boats. These objects provide a good insight into people’s struggle for existence and the resourcefulness it took to survive under harsh conditions.
The hat of Gísli in Uppsalir is preserved at the museum along with some of his other things. They bear clear witness to this special man who became famous in Iceland one evening hour. The TV program which featured him can also be seen at the museum.
The museum has a bright and homely coffee shop, an ideal place to enjoy refreshments. It has a wireless Internet connection which all can use. A regional information centre is operated at the museum, providing information about other interesting places in this part of the country as well as accommodation and much more.

The museum is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00. The museum is open only in summer from May24th to September 15th.
The museum may be opened on request at other hours by contacting the museum director, telephone 456 1569 and 456 1514.
